Brand-New Galvanizing Kettle

At Durban Galvanizing, we believe that providing a world-class finish starts with world-class infrastructure. That’s why we are thrilled to announce a significant upgrade at our Phoenix branch: the installation of a brand-new galvanizing kettle, precision-engineered by W. Pilling in Germany.

While the new kettle matches the dimensions of its predecessor, what lies beneath the surface is a leap forward in technology and material science.

Why the Change?

Galvanizing kettles operate under extreme conditions, holding molten zinc at approximately 450°C. Over time, even the toughest steel faces degradation. By proactively replacing our unit, we are ensuring:

  • Zero Downtime: Minimizing the risk of structural fatigue to keep our production lines moving.
  • Consistent Quality: A fresh kettle ensures optimal heat distribution, which is critical for the uniform metallurgical bond your projects require.
  • Operational Safety: Maintaining the highest standards for our team and your materials.

The Pilling Standard: German Engineering

When it came to choosing a supplier, there was no compromise. W. Pilling’s journey began in 1873 as a specialised German metalworking firm. Over the last 150 years, they have evolved from a regional manufacturer into the global leader in kettle technology. Their reputation is built on:

  • Specialized Manufacturing: Kettles are produced exclusively in their Riepe factory using warm-forming techniques to minimize mechanical stress.
  • Advanced Welding: They utilize a unique Electroslag Welding (ESW) process. This single-layer weld ensures consistent integrity throughout the entire thickness of the kettle wall, eliminating the weak points often found in standard welding.

The Science of “Low-Silicone” Steel

The composition of the kettle itself is critically important. We’ve opted for a low-silicone, low-carbon steel specifically designed for the galvanizing environment.

  • Reduced Reactivity: Standard steel can react aggressively with molten zinc (the “Sandelin effect”), leading to rapid erosion of the kettle walls.
  • Enhanced Longevity: By utilizing a specialized low-silicone blend (typically $Si < 0.02\%$), we significantly slow down the “iron-loss” process, extending the life of the kettle and ensuring the zinc bath remains pure.
  • Predictable Performance: This material is more resistant to the thermal expansion and contraction cycles of a 24/7 industrial environment.

Commitment to Our Clients

This investment in the Phoenix branch is an investment in you. By partnering with the best in German engineering, Durban Galvanizing continues to lead the way in providing durable, high-quality corrosion protection for South Africa’s steel industry.

Stay tuned for more updates as we fire up the new kettle!
